En una entrevista a ETB, Barreda ha recordado que el PP defendió, en su día, que la decisión del Gobierno Zapatero de paralizar la actividad de Garoña en 2013 fue «política», cuando debería haberlo hecho de acuerdo a los criterios e informes del Consejo de Seguridad Nuclear, «que tiene la responsabilidad en España en estas materias».
Aunque ha dicho que la decisión será planteada por el nuevo Consejo de Ministros, ésta será «técnica, no política, porque hoy apetezca o deje de apetecer». «Siempre hemos defendido que, si los informes técnicos son favorables, la centrales debe seguir funcionando y si son negativos, debe dejar de funcionar opine lo que opine el político de turno», ha precisado.
Barreda ha dicho entender la preocupación de quienes aluden a las causas de seguridad, pero ha censurado la «demagogia» de los que comparan el riesgo con el de Fukushima o el de Lorca. «Lo que ha pasado en Fukushima tiene muy poco que ver con lo que puede pasar en Garoña», ha dicho.
Además, ha indicado que el hecho de que las centrales sean tecnológicamente parecidas «no significa nada» cuando se habla «de terremotos o maremotos». «Es una extrapolación gratuita. Hay que ver cómo se han renovado los equipos, qué valoración le merece al CSN y tomar las decisiones políticas de acuerdo con los técnicos y no al revés», ha concluido.
El diputado del PP, que ha reconocido no ser «ningún entusiasta de la energía nuclear», ha advertido que «no se pueden tomar decisiones políticas en temas técnicos» porque coloca la situación «en el terreno de la arbitrariedad».

En una rueda de prensa en Bilbao, el dirigente del PP vasco se ha referido de este modo a la ampliación de la vida de Garoña, asegurando que no ha habido «ninguna novedad» en la postura de su partido, porque el PP «siempre ha estado a favor de que sean los informes técnicos» los que determinen la continuidad o no de la central.
En este sentido, ha destacado que los informes elaborados por «especialistas y profesionales» afirman que Garoña «puede continuar más tiempo».
En relación a la postura contraria del alcalde de Vitoria, ha recordado que Maroto, que es «antes alcalde» de la capital alavesa, «siempre ha dicho que estaba a favor de que se cierre Garoña». En cualquier caso, ha precisado que el PP no es «un partido estalinista ni una secta», por lo que le parece «muy bien» que Maroto «piense lo que crea oportuno».
