Por otro lado, Zapatero enfatizó que el cambio climático es «sin duda» el «gran reto» de la próxima generación. Así, señaló que su mayor problema será la gestión de los recursos públicos globales en un mundo que ha pasado en tan sólo un siglo de 1.000 a 7.000 millones de personas.
«Los efectos del cambio climático son una realidad incuestionable que afectan a las materias primas, al equilibrio económico y a la energía«, agregó. Por ello, indicó que un «reto esencial» será cómo realizar un enfoque distinto del desarrollo y el crecimiento.

Por su parte, el diputado de Izquierda Unida en el Congreso, Gaspar Llamazares, señaló que España tiene una «dependencia pequeña» de la energia nuclear, entre el 18 y el 19 por ciento del gasto total, y aseguró que «puede ser suplida».
En concreto, indicó que esta independencia «se está logrando en los último años con un incremento de las energías renovables y con un mayor ahorro y eficiencia energética». De esta forma, afirmó que «hay un margen de maniobra para un programa de cierre paulatino de las centrales nucleares».
En declaraciones a TVE, Llamazares se refirió al último accidente registrado en la central nuclear de Fukushima, en Japón, para advertir de que «la forma de apagar el mayor nivel tecnológico a manguerazos o poniendo las centrales bajo una alfombra de cemento, demuestra que la tecnología nuclear está por encima de las posibilidades» actuales.
Por lo tanto, insistió en la necesidad de apostar por «un cierre paulatino y ordenado de las centrales, como el que se ha llevado a cabo en Alemania».
